Fascial Distortion Model

The Fascial Distortion Model (FDM) is a manual therapy treatment method that focuses on distortions, i.e. changes and abnormalities of the body's fascial systems. FDM was developed by Dr. Stephen Typaldos, an American osteopathic physician in the 1990s. The basis of the model is that pain and movement restriction can result from six different types of distortion of the fascial system. These distortions can be treated in different ways with manual techniques.

Fascia is a connective tissue network that permeates the entire body, wrapping and connecting muscles, bones, nerves and other structures. Fascia ensures the structural integrity of the body, enables movement, and plays an important role in the functioning of the body's various systems. Any change or injury in the fascial system can cause pain, movement restriction and functional disorders.

The six distortion types of FDM:

  • Triggerband: Connective tissue lines in the muscle belly that cause pain and tension.
  • Herniated trigger point: Muscle knots or tension points that are often painful
  • Continuum distortion: Disruption of the connection between the fascia and the periosteum. Characterized by point-like change and pain.
  • Fold distortion: Change along the fold lines of the fascia. Often related to accidents and injuries.
  • Cylinder distortion: Disorders in the cylindrical structures of the fascia. Often manifests as numbness, sensory disturbance, tingling.
  • Tectonic fixation: Lack of displacement of the layers of fascia relative to each other. Associated with joint stiffness.

The FDM therapist takes a detailed medical history and performs postural and movement examinations to identify distortions. Treatment methods include various manual techniques aimed at correcting fascial distortions and restoring the body's structural and functional integrity. During FDM treatment, the therapist applies special grips to stretch, relax the fascia and release blocks.

FDM can be effectively applied to treat various musculoskeletal problems, such as back and neck pain, sports injuries, joint problems and chronic pain. The method can bring quick and lasting results, as it acts directly on the causes of pain and functional disorders.

In summary, the Fascial Distortion Model is an innovative and effective manual therapy method that enables targeted treatment of fascial distortions, thereby improving patients' quality of life and movement functions.
